Project Spark goes completely free
No more DLC planned, store credit for late purchases
Team Dakota have announced that Project Spark is going completely free on October 5th. All current DLC will be available to everybody at no cost. Around 50 DLC packs have been released so far. The game officially launched back in October 2014 for PC and Xbox One.
As the game is going free, Microsoft is offering refunds to those who have jumped on board in the last few months. Any customer that purchased digital content, or the retail box, after July 28th will receive a full refund in the form of Microsoft store credit. Credit will be automatically placed into user accounts before the end of the year. Purchases made before July 28th will not be eligible for this refund. Any unspent tokens will be converted into Microsoft store credit.
Reception from users on the official forums has been mixed. Some believe that going free will bring more gamers as it enters a new phase of user creation. Others say that free users will just copy existing levels, now they have access to all the content. And certain members even believe that this marks the end of Project Spark.
No future DLC is planned for the game, although some unreleased assets may find their way into future updates. Conker's Big Reunion DLC has been cancelled. The PC version still does not have multiplayer, even though Xbox One version has had it for over a year. The developers have stated that PC multiplayer is “a possibility. Not a near-future possibility.”
Project Spark began as a beta on the PC platform back in December 2013. It made its way onto the Xbox One just 3 months later. It officially launched for PC and Xbox One back in October 2014. An Xbox 360 version was planned, but it is unlikely that it will see a release. According to the developers, Project Spark currently has over 200,000 active creators that produce around 350 games every day.
